Chapter 7: Appleton

The woman from Green Bay picked a Culver's in Appleton.

Nobody she knew would be caught dead there on a Saturday, she said on the phone.

She was right.

By two o'clock the lot was full of strangers, and nobody looked at me twice.

I had a butter burger in front of me that I was not eating.

Maddie had stayed home.

"If I'm in the room, she'll talk to me," she'd said. "If you're alone, she'll talk to you."

I hadn't asked what the difference was.

The woman arrived at 2:10.

She was thirty-one, my own height, with a tidy brown ponytail and a nurse's tired shoes.

A younger woman came in behind her and sat down without being introduced.

"My cousin," said the woman from Green Bay. "She asked to be here."

The cousin said nothing.

She had her coat zipped to her chin and her hands in her sleeves.

I held out Maddie's phone, with the August message open.

"I'm sorry. I should have said something. Don't use my name."

"I wrote that at two in the morning," the woman said. "I almost deleted it."

"Why didn't you?"

"Because she wrote me first, and she didn't ask me for anything." She turned her paper cup in a circle. "She just said, 'Is it you he said it to?'"

"Said what?"

She looked at me for a long moment.

"Let me guess his line," she said. "'She threw herself at me.'"

I nodded.

The cousin made a small noise and put her face in her hand.

"It was the night before our wedding," the woman said. "The rehearsal dinner at a supper club. She was twenty-two. She was the youngest bridesmaid. He walked her to the coat check to help her find a scarf."
