Chapter 14: Los Angeles

"Senior Chemist," Jared read to the camera. "Hannah Ostrom. June tenth."

He held the sleeve steady so the phone could focus.

"She approved this product. She signed it into production herself. Then it hurt people, and she went online and blamed the woman who used it."

On the big screen the comments poured up the side.

"I didn't sign that," I said.

He finally turned and looked at me.

"Then tell everybody where you were, Han."

I opened my mouth.

I didn't have it.

Eleven thousand people watched me not have it.

"She can't," Alyssa said softly. "Can she."

Sam had my elbow.

"We're leaving," he said in my ear. "Now. Don't give him another second."

The bride picked her scarf up off the floor.

She didn't put it back on.

She walked out ahead of us with her head bare in the rain.

I didn't sleep.

I lay in the upstairs bed with my hands on my stomach and went through June one day at a time.

There was a hole in the middle of it.

At seven on Friday morning my prepaid phone rang.

Only four people had the number.

One of them was my mother.

"Hannah."

"Somebody from church sent me a video. I watched that man hold up a piece of paper and say June tenth."

"Mom, I can't remember where I..."

"June tenth was your grandmother's funeral."

I sat up so fast the bed creaked.

"You drove over the night before," my mother said. "You stayed in your old room. You read the psalm, and you cried halfway through it, and your father had to finish."

It came back all at once.

The church basement with the folding chairs.

The smell of lilies so strong I'd gone outside to be sick behind the parking lot.

Jared hadn't come.

He'd said he had a distributor dinner he couldn't move.
