Chapter 23: Portland

The recording ran on for a few more seconds.

Then my lab tech's own voice, very small.

"Okay. I'll think about it."

She stopped it.

"I've listened to it maybe forty times," she said. "He said it like you were a delivery he was waiting on."

She picked the yellow notice off her fridge, folded it in half, and put it in a drawer.

"I'm not signing anything," she said. "Who do I send this to?"

"Sam's parked a block down the street."

"Of course he is."

She walked it out to him herself, in her sweatpants, in the rain.

On Saturday Sam drove me to Portland.

The doctor had said yes if we stopped every hour and I walked around.

At a rest stop near Kelso, Sam bought a tiny Christmas tree in a coffee can for my kitchen.

"It's for Dad," he said. "He'll want photos."

The man from the Portland company had called me three days after the expo.

His company made salon color in a converted cannery on the Willamette.

He'd been trying to buy the Ironwood license from Jared's father since 2021.

We met him at a steakhouse in the Pearl District.

Every table was full of Saturday couples and office Christmas parties.

He was in his sixties, with white hair and a red bow tie, and he stood up when I came in.
