Chapter 27: Closed
Nobody in the office moved.
"Brown," I said.
Jared's mother tucked the folder under her arm.
"She was a pretty girl with plain eyes, and my son was sixteen and wanted something out of a magazine. So I drove her to an optometrist."
"Why?"
"Because he was happy. I like my son happy. It's cheaper."
She looked down at my stomach.
"He spent ten years looking at you and seeing a pair of contacts I paid for. Think about that before you fight me for his name."
She went down the stairs in her good heels.
The bakery bell rang below.
The teacher sat down hard in her chair.
"That woman is the worst person I've ever met," the barista said. "And I've worked a coffee stand."
I didn't say anything.
I was thinking about every time he'd held my face in both hands.
Don't you ever wear colored contacts, Han.
He hadn't been afraid I'd change my eyes.
He'd been afraid I'd show him what they were copying.
Ray came and stood behind my chair.
He didn't say a word.
He just put one hand on my shoulder and left it there while the women cut the cake.
