Chapter 23: City Hall

Tobias did not kneel.

He stood on the wet lawn in his gala suit with his hands open at his sides, and he waited until I looked at him.

"Darcy."

"Yes."

"I'm not going to ask you the way he did. There's no ring, no camera, and no audience except your mother and the street."

"Good."

"I'm going to ask you a smaller question first." His voice was steady. "May I ask you the large one?"

I thought about it.

I thought about the ring in a velvet box on a hospital drive.

I thought about a text that said, would you go to city hall with me, and a phone that had never answered.

"Yes," I said.

"Will you marry me?"

My mother's walker creaked on the ramp.

"I'm not going to say yes tonight," I said.

"All right."

"I'm going to say yes on a Tuesday. At city hall. At ten in the morning, in a plain dress, with no phones in the room and nobody at the back waiting to laugh."

"That's a yes."

"It's a yes with terms."

"Say them."

"My mother pins the veil. Your sister stands up with me. Jenna sits in the second row, because nobody else invited her to anything." I swallowed. "And you don't say a word until the clerk asks you to."

"I'll say nothing else."

"You'll say your vows."

"After that, nothing else."

I started to laugh.

I laughed until my eyes ran, in an evening dress and flat shoes on my mother's lawn.

Tobias laughed too, low and rough.

Then he stepped forward and put his arms around me.

"Yes," I said into his coat. "Yes, I'll marry you."

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me, ask me properly on Tuesday."

"On Tuesday I will not ask," said Tobias. "On Tuesday I will only say yes."
