Chapter 24: The Table

My mother had set the table for six.

She had borrowed two chairs from the neighbor with the hose.

A yellow cloth lay over the kitchen table.

She had laid out her good plates, the ones with the blue rim, which I had never once seen used.

"Sit," she said, from the head of the table. "Everybody sit. The roast will not wait."

Tobias pulled out my chair.

I let him.

His sister took the seat across from me and leaned her cane against the wall, and Biscuit, who had come down in the car, lay under her feet with his chin on her shoe.

"He is not allowed at the table," my mother said.

"He's under it," said Tobias's sister.

"That's a technicality."

"I like technicalities."

"Hm," said my mother, and slipped the dog a piece of crust.

Jenna sat at the end, in a sweater, with her hands in her lap.

She had been offered a job in the front office of a Hallett hotel, away from any director's desk.

She had said yes with tears in her eyes.

She had also been given a plate before anyone else, because my mother had decided she was too thin.

"I can serve myself," said Jenna.

"You can eat what I give you," said my mother.

The last chair was by the door.

It was empty until the bell rang.

I went to open it.

Conor's mother stood on the step in a navy coat, holding a covered dish in both hands.
