Chapter 5: The Closet

I did not call Tobias Hallett that night.

I put his note in my pocket and told myself Sunday could wait for the money first, and he could wait until Monday.

I went back to the apartment at nine on Sunday morning, in my scrubs, with two empty duffel bags and my aunt's car keys.

The place was Conor's name on the lease and mine on half the rent.

I had my own key.

The door was already unlocked.

I stood in the hall and listened.

Someone was crying in the bedroom.

I walked in without knocking.

Jenna sat on the floor of the walk-in closet with her back against my shoe rack.

She was in a grey sweatshirt, and her blonde hair was a mess.

All around her were cardboard boxes marked in black pen: *JENNA, BATHROOM. JENNA, WINTER.*

A row of her blouses hung on the left side of the rail.

My dresses had been pushed into a tight bunch on the right.

I looked at that for a long moment.

"How long have you lived here?" I asked.

She wiped her face.

"Since the nineteenth."

"Of last month?"

"Yes."

The math hit me all at once.

That was three weeks of me coming home from double shifts to a closet I never opened.

"Did he tell you I knew?"

"He said it was all part of the prank." Jenna's voice cracked. "He said you knew I'd be moving in for the bit, and that you were going along with it."

"The bit."

"Yes."

I did not move.

"Show me," I said.

She picked her phone off the carpet with shaking hands and opened a message thread.

*G: D's fine with the account thing. She's embarrassed to ask you herself.*

*G: Hold it till Monday and keep it quiet. She wants it to be a surprise for him.*
