Chapter 7: Nine A.M.
I called the number on the cream card at ten o'clock on Sunday night.
He answered on the second ring.
"Ms. Bradfield."
"Nine tomorrow," I said. "Your office. You can start with why you hired Conor."
He was quiet for a moment.
"Nine," he said. "Come up to the top floor."
Hallett Hotels was on the fourteenth floor of a glass building by the river, and the lobby smelled of lemon polish and money.
The receptionist did not ask my name.
She stood up and said, "Mr. Hallett is expecting you," and held the door.
His office was large and almost bare.
There was a desk, two chairs, one window the width of the wall, and nothing on the shelves except a row of plain white binders.
Tobias stood when I came in.
He wore a grey suit and no tie.
He looked as though he had not slept, and I knew what that looked like.
"Sit, please."
"I'll stand."
"Then I'll stand too."
We stood on either side of his desk.
"Marley told me to ask you why you hired him," I said. "Ask you, not tell me. So I'm asking."
"I will answer that. First I want to give you this."
He took a cashier's cheque from a drawer and set it on the desk.
*Twenty thousand dollars. Pay to the order of Darcy Bradfield.*
I looked at it.
"Where did this come from?"
"Mr. Pellham booked a honeymoon on the company travel account on Friday afternoon, and he put his name and his assistant's on the tickets. I called him in at eight this morning."
