Chapter 4: The Sheets

His bedroom was at the top of the club, behind a door with two locks.

Ruggiero turned both of them and stood with his back against the wood.

"Separate rooms," I said. My voice came out thin. "That was the term. Nothing between us except what the Families have to see."

"Then they've decided to see everything," he said.

I laughed once, and it broke in the middle.

He pushed off the door and crossed the room slowly.

He stopped in front of me, close enough that I felt the heat of him through my dress.

"Last time I'll say it," he said. "You can stand there and I'll sit in that chair until sundown. They can bring their sheets."

"They'd know."

"Then I'll cut my hand and they'll see blood. I've bled for worse."

I looked at him.

At the scar through his eyebrow, the line of his mouth, the rolled sleeves and the veins in his forearms.

I had been engaged for three days to a man who only kissed my forehead.

He had never wanted me. Now I knew why.

I wanted this one. I knew it the moment he said he would cut his hand instead.

"I don't want the chair," I said.

His breath went out of him.

"Say it plainly, Nerina."

"I want you to take me to bed." I put my hand flat on his chest. "I want to be touched by someone who isn't lying to me."

His heart pounded under my palm.

He caught my wrist and brought it to his mouth.

His lips pressed hard against the inside of it, and I felt my knees go.

"Turn around," he said.

I turned.

His fingers found the hooks at the back of my dress and worked them open one by one, slowly, until the silk slid off my shoulders and over my hips and pooled on the floor.

He put his mouth against my neck.

I gasped, and he held me by the waist and pulled my back against him.

I could feel all of him, hard against my spine.

"You're shaking," he said into my skin.

"I'm not afraid."

"I know." His hand slid up over my ribs and closed around my breast. "That's why I'm shaking too."
