Chapter 6: No Daughter of Mine

I knelt in front of my sister's wheelchair and took her cold hands.

"There's no stranger," I said. "The heart is mine."

She stared at me.

"They tested me three days ago," I said. "I match you. I matched you from the first draw. Fabrizio proposed so I'd sign away my protection, and they were going to cut me open on Saturday."

"No," Costanza said.

"I heard Papa say it. I heard Mama say you must never know."

"No, Nerina. Papa wouldn't."

"Ask him."

She turned her head slowly.

Behind the Albertini sedans, a fourth car had pulled in.

My father got out of it, and my mother got out after him.

He wore his overcoat and his signet ring. He crossed the courtyard without hurrying.

Nobody spoke.

"Costanza," he said. "You were told to stay in bed."

"Papa." My sister's voice shook. "Whose heart is it?"

He said nothing.

"Mama," she said. "Whose?"

My mother put her hand over her mouth.

It was the only answer anyone needed.

Costanza began to cry without a sound.

"I won't take it," she said. "I won't. Take me back to the clinic and give it to someone else."

"You'll do as you're told," my father said.

"I'd rather die."

"You are twenty-four years old, and you will not die for a principle." He turned to me, and his eyes were flat. "You've made your point, Nerina. Come home."

"I'm married, Papa."

"To a Falsetti."

"To the man who opened his door when mine was locked."

A murmur went through the men along the walls.

My father smiled, and it frightened me more than shouting would have.
