Chapter 24: The Willow

On the last Saturday in April, Tobin drove me home for the weekend.

I had told him I wanted to walk by the river before supper.

He had said fine, and he had looked at me twice on the highway.

I turned twenty-one in March.

I had a first-year studio grade I wasn't going to tell my father until he'd had his coffee, and a model of a porch with a ramp that had stayed on the shelf in my room for two months because I couldn't bring myself to hand it in.

The shop windows on Main Street were washed.

The Keogh Hardware sign had been repainted green.

The man from Columbus had sold the building to my father in February, at the price of the appraisal, without once raising his voice.

My father said he had never met a more reasonable cousin.

We left the Honda by the Elm Street bridge and went down the bank path on foot.

The grass was wet, and the willow trees along the water had put out new leaves.

Tobin walked with his hands in his pockets, and he kept shooting me looks.

"You're plotting," he said.

"I'm walking."

"You walk like you're plotting."

"Then I'm plotting."

"Ciara."

"Almost there."

We passed the bridge, where the white lights were off in daylight.

On the far bank, a man in a post office jacket was lifting parcels out of a truck.

He looked up, and he saw me, and he stood very still with a box in his arms.
