Chapter 6: The Oath Stone

I followed the pain down a stone corridor behind the great hall.

The side door at the end was open, and six Lowell guards stood in a ring in the cellar passage beyond it.

Lucian was in the middle of them.

They had silver cuffs on both his wrists, and the skin under the metal was smoking.

I felt every second of it.

"Let him go," I said.

Cornelius Lowell stepped out of the shadows with his hands folded, exactly as polite as before.

"Miss Ellison," he said. "You are mistaken. Mr. Ward is held on a complaint of forced bonding. It is the Lowell house's right to detain him until dusk."

"The complaint is false."

"That will be for the Hierarchy to decide."

"I'm his mate."

I held up my wrist and showed him the mark.

"You touch him, you touch me. You put silver on him, I feel it. Ask your guards why none of them will look at me."

None of them would.

Cornelius's smile did not change.

"Lowell law has held this house for three centuries," he said. "I do not take instruction from a girl who was my son's fiancée six hours ago."

"Then you'll take it from her."

The eldest came down the corridor with her two grey guards, and her cane struck the stone at every step.

She did not look at Cornelius.

"The cuffs," she said.

A guard unlocked them.

Lucian let out one breath through his teeth, and I put my hands over his wrists.

The burns were already closing.

"The Hierarchy will hold him, if anyone does," the eldest said. "Not the Lowells. Dusk, Cornelius. Bring your witnesses."

At dusk, they brought the whole city.

The Hierarchy sat in a half circle on the top floor of an old hotel on Park Avenue, and the room was full to the walls.
