Chapter 8: A Toast to Bridget

Margo's POV

The eldest ordered a peace dinner, so we went.

Two nights after the council, Lucian's car pulled up in front of the Lowell house on Fifth Avenue, and neither of us got out.

"If she's in there," I said, "how do we find her?"

"We don't, tonight," he said. "Tonight you eat and watch."

"And you?"

"I try not to put my hand through Cornelius's chest."

He said it so evenly that I laughed.

His mouth moved.

I felt the small warm pull of that through the bond, and I looked out of the window until it passed.

"One thing," he said, as the driver opened my door. "She hums when she's frightened. The Water Is Wide. Always the same two lines."

"I'll listen for it."

The dining room held a table for twelve.

Cornelius sat at one end, and Tristan sat at his right, and four members of the Hierarchy sat along the sides with their napkins already in their laps.

Cornelius rose when he saw me.

"Miss Ellison," he said. "Mr. Ward. I am so pleased you could join us. Let us put the unpleasantness behind us."

"Of course," Lucian said.

The soup was blood and cream, and nobody touched it.

Eight servants stood along the walls, all in grey, all with their eyes down.

The driver stood by the far door with the steel case at his feet.

I watched him pick it up when the second course was cleared.

He carried it out through a door I had not seen before, a narrow one behind a curtain, and it closed behind him.

East.

"Margo," Tristan said, lifting his glass. "A toast."
