Six hundred people heard him say it.
The speakers carried it to the back wall, to the balconies, to the cameras.
Bryce didn't know yet.
He was still leaning over my table, waiting for me to break.
I picked up the microphone.
"Yes," I said. "I would have."
Bryce's face loosened, just a little, with relief.
"I'd have married you at three o'clock that Friday in my muddy boots," I said.
"I'd have gone back to my desk on Monday and built your next pitch and let you put your name on it."
"I'd have kept paying half your rent. I'd have done it for years."
He opened his mouth.
"You said request denied," I said. "In front of the whole room. And you flew her to my suite."
I looked past him, up at the stage, where Henry stood with the glass trophy still in his hand.
"So at three o'clock I married the man who'd been sitting in a coffee shop across the street for two hours, just in case I came."
The officer holding Bryce's arm looked at me, then at Henry.
Then he looked at Bryce and tightened his grip.
