Chapter 21: Struck From the Record

Derrick's POV

I crossed the ballroom without deciding to.

Dean had reached the stage and was holding out both hands to the woman who had lied to him for a year.

"Give me the baby," Dean said.

Heidi pulled her son against her chest.

"Dean, no."

"I signed the line. In the eyes of the law he's mine."

"You know he isn't."

"The law doesn't know it yet." Dean's smile was wet and ugly. "He's an Auchincloss. Whatever the Auchincloss family hands that boy, his father manages. That's me, Heidi. That's my signature."

So that was the last thing left in him.

I stepped up onto the stage and put my body between them.

"Move, Carrigan," Dean said.

"No."

"She's lied to me for a year. You heard her. She owes me."

"She owes you an apology," I said. "You're not taking a child out of this room to sell."

He swung.

It was a wild punch from a man who had never been hit back.

I caught his wrist in the air and turned it, and he went down on one knee for the second time in two weeks.

A few people in the crowd laughed.

Dean heard it, and his face went through red to gray.

"Let go," he said. "Let go of me. I'll sue every one of you."

"Sir," said a woman's voice below the stage.

A woman in a green dress had come up to the steps with her husband behind her.

She was in her fifties, with reading glasses on a chain, and she spoke in a flat, patient voice.

"I'm with the county records office," she said. "My husband sits on the Foundation. I processed that birth form myself on Monday."

Dean twisted his head to look at her.
