Chapter 19: The Deed
At eleven on Monday morning we sat in a glass conference room on the fourth floor of the bank.
Monty was at the head of the table in a plain gray suit, with Bree on his left and a notary at his right.
Across from them sat the bank officer, who had a folder and a nervous smile.
Kip's mother had worn her good coat.
Kip sat beside her, and I sat beside him.
Under the table, his hand was on my knee.
I had put it there myself.
"The deed transfer is a single page," Bree said. "Monty reads it, Monty signs it, the notary stamps it, and the trust releases the property to Mrs. Baumann outright. The loan guarantee is voided in the second document."
"I'll read it," Monty said.
"Aloud isn't required."
"I want to."
He pulled the page toward him.
He laid his left hand flat on the table, and the forefinger of his right hand under the first line.
Everyone in the room understood what it cost him, and no one looked away.
"The VanAlen Family Trust," he read, slowly, "hereby conveys to the, ah, to the owner of record. No, to the person named below. All right, title and interest."
His voice caught on the word interest, and he went on.
It took him three minutes.
Kip's mother had her eyes shut, and when he finished she wiped her cheek with the back of her glove.
"Thank you," she said.
"It was never mine to keep," Monty said.
He signed, and the notary stamped, and the bank officer let his shoulders drop.
