Chapter 21: The Lobby

The Lowell Grand lobby had two hundred white candles, a string quartet, and a banner that said: A Century of Welcome.

Cameras stood in rows behind a velvet rope.

Helen was at a brass podium under the chandelier, in cream silk, holding a framed photograph of the hotel's first doorman.

I walked in through the revolving door with Elias on one side and Nan on the other.

The doorman held it for me.

He was seventy, in a long gray coat, and he had held that door for me every morning for five years.

"Ms. Farrington," he said, and touched his cap.

Helen saw me in the middle of a sentence and kept going.

"...because hospitality is the oldest family value there is," she said.

"It is the promise that anyone who walks through our doors is safe."

I walked down the middle of the lobby, and the string quartet lost its place.

"Helen," I said.

My voice carried to the balcony.

She smiled at the cameras and then at me.

"Lydia. I'm so sorry, but this is a private event."

"It's a press event. Look at the cameras."

Someone laughed.

I took the envelope out of my coat and held it up.

"Six years ago you told your landlord's manager to double a rent until a man went away," I said.

"That man was my father."

The cameras swung to me.

"This is the order in your handwriting."

I lifted the second page.

"And this is the note the man who carried it wrote the same night."

I read the last line of his note out loud.

"I believe my employer wished the tenant to fail."

A reporter in the front row said, "Mrs. Lowell?"
