Chapter 7: The Blue Notebook
Preston's POV
I drove home at eleven with my phone on the passenger seat, and I kept looking at it.
The apartment on the Gold Coast was dark.
Lydia had left a light on over the stove every night for four years, and I had never once asked why.
Tonight it was off.
I stood in the kitchen with my coat on and looked at her mugs on the shelf, all of them different, none of them matching.
Then I called Gwen.
She picked up on the first ring.
"Pres," she said. "Oh, thank God. I've been sick about this since Friday."
"Did you call the restaurant before Lydia got there?" I said.
"Pres, listen."
"I haven't finished asking."
"Helen's office asked me to pass on a timeline," Gwen said, fast and soft. "I told them it was cruel. I said somebody would get hurt. They said it was family office policy, and I'm only an assistant, I couldn't say no."
I hadn't asked about policy.
I had asked whether she called.
She had an answer ready for a question I hadn't finished.
"I only ever wanted to protect you," she said. "You know that. Six years."
"I know."
"Come over. I'll make tea. You shouldn't be alone."
"I'm going to sleep, Gwen."
"Sleep well, Pres."
I hung up and stood looking at my own hand.
I had known Gwen since I was twenty-nine, and I had never once checked what she told me.
