Chapter 12: The Key
On Monday morning, the lawyer was waiting at the top of the stairs.
He had his cardigan buttoned wrong, and he had not slept either.
"Come in, Miss Braeburn. Mrs. Overholt. I have it."
On his desk lay a long white envelope stamped by the county clerk.
Beside it was a photocopy of the page Gary had given me.
"I drove to the county seat yesterday and waited for the clerk to open at eight," he said. "I wanted the filed original, with the seal."
He sat down, and I sat across from him with my hands in my lap.
"Tell me plainly," I said. "I don't want to hear it twice."
"The house at 14 Linden Street belongs to you."
My ears rang.
"It has belonged to you since the hour your mother died. It never passed to your aunt. It never passed to anyone but you." He pushed the envelope an inch toward me. "The trust held it in your name until you came of age. You came of age in October. I wrote to tell you so in the same certified letter your aunt signed for."
"So I've been sleeping in my own basement."
"Yes."
I heard Esther take a breath beside me.
"And Janet?" I said. "What is she?"
"A guest of the property," he said. "Allowed to stay while you were a minor, as your guardian. That permission ended on your eighteenth birthday. She has been in your house for three months without a lease, an invitation or the right to sell a single board of it."
"She has a listing agreement," I said.
I held up my phone, where Gary had sent me the photo, and his eyebrows rose.
