Chapter 23: Move-In Day
We left Linden Street at four in the morning in Gary's truck, with the cab packed to the roof.
Esther sat in the middle in her green vest, with a cooler on her lap.
Brett rode in the truck bed on a lawn chair, under a tarp, because he said it was an adventure and nobody could talk him out of it.
Kayla followed in Esther's Buick with the boxes that wouldn't fit.
By noon we were on a street in Philadelphia, behind forty other cars, with students in matching T-shirts swarming the curb.
A girl with a clipboard leaned in Gary's window.
"Name?"
"Hallie Braeburn," I said.
She ran her finger down the list and smiled.
"Fourth floor. There are carts around the side. Welcome."
I got out and stood on the sidewalk.
The building was red brick, with a wide stone doorway and vines on one side.
Over the doorway, carved in the stone, was a date that was older than anyone I knew.
I had looked at its picture on a screen a hundred times.
It was bigger in person, and it did not look like it was waiting for me to leave.
"You okay?" Brett asked, climbing out of the truck bed with the tarp over one shoulder.
"I'm standing in front of it."
"Yeah."
"I'm standing in front of it, and nobody's going to take it back."
He didn't say anything.
He lifted the first box.
It took four of us two hours.
There was no elevator for the freight, and the stairs were narrow.
Gary carried the heavy box with the winter coats and the kitchen things, and he climbed it a flight at a time, stopping on each landing to wipe his forehead.
"Dad, let me take it," Brett said.
