Chapter 14: You Never Asked

"Ask me about the date in an hour," Shane said. "I can't say anything else right now."

He went to Jo's bathroom and locked the door, and the shower came on.

Jo stood in the kitchen with her back to me and both hands on the edge of the sink.

I sent the recording to myself, to Jo and to my father, one after the other, because Megan could take my phone if she got close enough.

The files went out.

I put the phone on the table.

"You heard him," Jo said, not turning around. "Okay. Just okay."

"I heard him."

"Do you know how many times he's said it to her? Standing in your kitchen. Sitting at your table. You were right there."

"I was."

"You handed her the salt."

I said nothing.

She turned around.

Her eyes were red and dry, and her scrubs were still in a pile on the counter where she'd dropped them last night.

"I have to say something," she said. "I've had it in my head since the night I picked him up, and I can't hold it anymore. If you want to leave after, leave."

"Say it."

"You were the one person he trusted. Not me, not his dad. You. He told me that in the car, before he stopped talking. He said, Devin can't know, he's the only one who doesn't look at me like I'm broken."

Her voice was low and even.

"And for four years you sat across from him every Sunday. He wouldn't be alone in a room with your girlfriend. He slept on a floor so he wouldn't have to be near her bedroom. He asked you a question at the gym that was him begging you to look."

"Jo."

"You never asked him why. Not once. You never said, hey, why do you leave the room whenever she comes in?"

I could have said a lot.

I could have said that I was twenty-two, and in love, and that nobody tells you a thing like that could be sitting in your own apartment.
