Chapter 17: The Raw Footage

I did not go back to the coffee shop.

Megan had moved her farewell to a stage on Wednesday and put my name in the front row, and I had lain awake over it all night.

A stage was the one place she was sure of, so I wanted her girl on my side before she got there.

On Monday I waited outside the humanities building at ten to eight, where the program kept its mailboxes, because Shane had said she checked hers before every class.

I stood by the bike rack in my hoodie with my phone in my hand.

Shane had told me not to go alone.

I had told him I would stay where people could see me, and I had said it into his face until he nodded.

She came up the walk with her backpack on one shoulder and the phone in her hand, already filming the trees.

She saw me and stopped.

"Don't," she said. "I told you. I can't."

"I'm not asking for the video."

"Then what?"

"I'm going to show you something. If you look at it and walk away, I won't follow you."

She said nothing.

I held out my phone.

It was one of the six photographs of the Rounds file.

I had picked it because of a line far down the page, under a heading from the second semester of junior year.

The line read: Round 31. F posts what I say by midnight, or the Halloween clip goes up. F is so easy.

She read it.

She read it again.

Then she took the phone out of my hand, which I had not expected, and scrolled with her thumb.

There were nine lines with that letter on them.

Some of them were small, like F lends the good camera and F pays for the cab.
