Chapter 18: The Roommate

She knocked at ten that night, so softly that I took it for the radiator.

Jo opened the door on the chain.

"I'm Megan's roommate," said the woman on the landing. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry it's late."

She was small, with a wool hat pulled down to her eyebrows and a laptop clutched against her coat.

She kept looking over her shoulder at the stairs.

"Is she with you?" Jo asked.

"She's at a rehearsal dinner with the program. I told her I had a migraine. I have about two hours."

Jo took the chain off.

We sat her at the kitchen table with a mug of tea.

Shane stayed at the far end of the room by the window.

He had not been alone with a woman he didn't know in four years, and he stood where he could see the door.

The roommate saw him, and she did something I didn't expect.

She turned her chair a little, so her back was to the wall and her face was to the room, and she kept her hands flat on the table where he could see them.

Shane breathed out.

"Thank you," he said.

"I live with her," she said. "I know exactly what it is."

She pulled off her hat.

"I'm not here for you, either of you. I'm here because of Wednesday."

She opened the laptop and turned it toward us.

It was a document with a heading in large type.

REMARKS, LISBON FELLOWSHIP CEREMONY. DRAFT FOUR.

"She prints it at our place," the roommate said. "She doesn't lock the printer. She practices in the bathroom mirror every night with a tissue in her hand."

I started reading over her shoulder.

It opened with a thank-you to the dean, which was ordinary.

Then it said: There is something I have kept quiet for four years, because I was afraid, and tonight I want to be brave.

Jo said, flat, "Oh, she didn't."
