Chapter 5: Private Context

The conduct office was on the second floor of a building I had walked past every day for four years without going in.

The officer had gray hair, a lanyard and a tissue box she had moved to the exact middle of the table.

Megan sat across from me in a plain black sweater with no makeup.

I almost didn't recognize her.

She had red eyes, a damp tissue in one hand and her other hand over her mouth.

"Mr. Tressler," the officer said. "This is an informal meeting. Ms. Schuler has submitted a written statement. I'll read the main points, and then you can respond."

"Sure."

She put on her glasses.

"Ms. Schuler reports that following the end of your relationship, you appeared at her apartment unannounced, entered a men's locker room to confront a mutual friend, and that you have a history of monitoring her phone and location."

"That's my apartment too," I said. "My name is on the lease."

"Please let me finish."

"I went to get my clothes."

"Devin," Megan said softly.

She said it softly, the way she always did.

I wanted to put my fist through the table.

"I just want everyone to be calm," she told the officer. "I'm not trying to ruin his life. I'm leaving the country in twelve days. I only want it to stop."

"Stop what?" I said.

"The messages. The showing up."

"I sent you no messages."

"You called me seven times last night."

I stared at her.

It was her seven.

She had picked it on purpose, the same number as that night, and she let me see that she'd picked it.

"I have phone records," I said. "Check the log. I did not call you."
