Chapter 9: Devin's POV: The Passport

Devin's POV

I did not move until Shane had gone back down the stairs.

Jo stood in the doorway with her hand flat on the frame and her back to me, and I watched her shoulders drop.

She shut the door and turned around.

We looked at each other across the dark room.

"You heard," she said.

"Some of it."

"What did you hear?"

"That he's scared I'll look at him a certain way. That you already did."

She waited for me to ask the next thing.

I had a dozen questions in my mouth.

I looked at her face, at the red edges of her eyes, and I thought of Shane on a barstool saying I can't be hated by you too.

"It's after midnight," I said.

She stared at me.

"It's rule one," I said. "I'm not asking tonight."

Something went across her face that I couldn't read, and then she crossed the room, picked up her mug from the floor and said, "Go to sleep, Tressler."

I did not sleep.

The Lisbon program held its mandatory orientation at ten the next morning in a lecture hall on the third floor of the humanities building.

I was not enrolled in it.

I walked in at ten past, sat in the back row in a gray hoodie and nobody stopped me.

Megan was up front in the second row with her friends around her.

Shane sat next to her.

I knew that he had not wanted to.

I could see it from the back of the room.

She had chosen the aisle seat so that he was pinned between her and a wall.
