Chapter 10: Say My Name

Jasper's POV

Margot Winslow stood in the lodge doorway with her smile gone, and then she put it back on, and that was how I knew she was frightened.

I had watched her at the supper and at the Council.

She was quick and warm and she always touched the person she was talking to.

Now she stood with snow on her white fur and her hands open in front of her.

"Cecily, sweetheart," she said. "Give me the dress. You're upset."

"No," said Cecily.

It was the first time I had heard her say it.

"It's Dad's gift," Margot said. "He had the gown reset this winter, that's all. Every Alpha's daughter gets a few extra stones. It's just tradition."

"They're Ironwood stones," I said. "Every one has my mark inside the arm."

"Then Dad bought them from you."

"He did not."

"Then Clara sent them back, and Dad reset them on our gowns so nothing would be wasted." She spread her hands. "Alpha Coyle, I understand you're angry. But you have the wrong enemy."

Clara had stood up from the floor.

She did not say anything, and she did not need to.

She looked at her sister for a long moment.

"You packed my bag in twenty minutes, Margot," she said. "The charger, the boots, the photo from Grandpa's funeral."

"I was helping you."

"You went through my room. You left my savings book in the drawer."

Margot's smile held, but a small muscle in her cheek had begun to twitch.

"I'll tell Dad you said that," she said.

"Tell him."

"Cecily," Margot said again, softer. "Give me the dress. Please."
