Chapter 18: The Mate's Oath
Clara's POV
My mother walked to the middle of the Winter Moon hall and stood where I had stood to write my name.
She wore the dark green dress and no jewelry.
Jasper's hand was a warm weight at the small of my back, and through the bond I felt him go still.
"Elder," said Lorna. "May I speak?"
"The Luna has the floor."
"I have lived in this pack for thirty years." She did not raise her voice. "I have never stood before the Council. I stand here because my daughter has shamed my house, and I will not let my husband's weakness cover it."
My father made a small sound in his chair.
"I have watched Margot all week," my mother said. "I saw her carry her father's confession for him, and I knew it was false. Gordon has never lied to me in his life. He lies badly, and he lied for her."
She turned and looked at Margot.
It was a long look, and Margot's face crumpled.
"Mama," she said.
"You took your sister's gems. I do not yet know how, or when, and it breaks my heart to say it." My mother turned back to the hall. "My eldest daughter has done this thing. I offer her to the Council's justice, and I ask only that you spare her father, who is a foolish man and not a wicked one."
The hall breathed out.
Some people were already nodding.
I watched my mother's hands.
They were folded perfectly, and they did not move.
"Thank you, Luna," said the elder. "The Council will hear Margot Winslow's mate."
