Chapter 4: The Lobby Screen

"That's me," I said from the study doorway.

Elias turned in his chair, and he did not look surprised.

"Yes."

"Why do you have a picture of me from before I worked for you?"

"I looked at every candidate before I hired one. You were the only one I looked at twice."

"On a street. From across the road."

"Yes," he said again. "I'm not going to lie to you, Joanna. I'm also not going to tell you everything at midnight on your wedding night."

"Is that why you hired me? Because of something you saw?"

"Go to bed. Ask me again tomorrow, and I'll answer one thing."

I wanted to throw the frame at his head.

I took the water glass instead and went back down the hall.

I didn't sleep.

At nine the next morning, Bea was in the penthouse kitchen with a tablet and a bakery bag, and her curls were flat on one side.

"Four hours in a hotel security office," she said. "I wore down a night manager. He cried."

"Did you get it?"

"I got three angles."

She turned the tablet toward me.

The bridal suite hall camera showed Whitney going in with two coffees and a small black bag.

A second angle, from inside the suite, showed her hugging me.

In the mirror behind us, she was reaching into the bag with her free hand.

She took out a pair of small silver scissors.

She slid them into the seam at the back of my dress while she hugged me, and I never felt a thing.

Then she poured her wine slowly onto my skirt, looked straight at the camera lens, and let the glass fall.

Bea watched my face.
