Chapter 13: In Handcuffs

Lydia stood in the clerk's hallway with her sunglasses in her fist and waited for me to hit her.

I didn't.

"You wore my blazer," I said.

"Yes."

"You walked into a government office and signed my name to my own marriage."

"I didn't sign it. Carter signed it. I only carried it to the window."

"Why?"

"Because Margaret said the license had to be filed before Monday, and Carter was too well known at that counter."

Jack stepped closer to me.

He said nothing, but Lydia looked at him and took a step back.

The lawyer touched my elbow.

"Chair, the detectives are on the stairs," he said. "Anything this woman says to you now, she can say to them."

"Then let her say it to them."

Lydia's eyes filled.

"I'll say it all," she said. "I'll tell them about the notary, and the Friday lunch, and the money Margaret promised me. But I need something from you first."

"What?"

"A deal."

The hallway had gone silent around us.

Two men in dark jackets came up the stairs at the far end, and the man in the windbreaker lifted his phone to film them.

"Name it," I said.

"My board seats back. Your lawyers on my side. Margaret can't touch me if I'm under Dunhill's protection."

I looked at her for a long time.

She had slept in the coat.

There was a bruise on her wrist where someone had gripped her.

"No," I said.

She flinched.

"Please. I'm the only one who can put her away."

"You'll do that anyway."

"Why would I?"

"Because you're already standing here, and because Margaret would rather see you ruined than see you quiet," I said. "I won't buy your testimony, Lydia. If you want to tell the truth, tell it for free."

Her mouth shook.

"You're cruel."

"You wore my clothes to steal my life."

She had no answer to that.

The detectives reached us, and the older one looked at the clerk's supervisor, then at me.
