On Monday morning I signed the grant in Room 114.
The principal had asked if we could use the auditorium.
I said the art room.
The heron still stood on the back table with its wing dry and wired.
Fourteen kids sat on stools in a half circle, and the sophomore from the roof had put on a tie for it.
The Brantley Foundation's interim chair sat by the window with a leather folder on her knee.
Jack stood at my left, where he stood now.
Eleanor sat in the one good armchair, which two students had carried up from the teachers' lounge.
She had refused to be wheeled.
She held her cane across her lap and looked at the kids the way she used to look at a boardroom.
"Fourteen million dollars," the principal said, and her voice wobbled. "For the arts, over twelve years. Studios, supplies, a gallery, two full-time teachers."
Nobody clapped yet.
The kids were looking at the folder.
"It's not only for this school," I said. "It's for every public high school in the Bronx that wants a kiln and a teacher who isn't also coaching soccer."
"Can we have a kiln?" the sophomore asked.
