Chapter 20: Northern Lights, All Four

Kit's POV

By the time Jesse and I got to the end of the dock, the other three had built a fire.

Rolf had dragged a steel drum out of the boathouse and set it on the planks, and split birch burned in it with a roar.

Sparks went straight up into the sky.

Above the sparks, the aurora was doing something I had never seen it do.

It hung directly overhead in a corona, green and white and violet, with long rays pouring down from a single point above our heads.

It moved so fast that the snow on the ice changed color under it.

"Kp seven," Beck said, quietly. "Nobody sees this twice."

Sheepskins lay across the planks in a wide ring around the fire.

Over them, Hank had spread the heavy wool blankets, three deep.

He stood at the edge of the firelight in his shirtsleeves with the sky on his face.

"Come here," he said.

I went.

Jesse's hand stayed in mine until the last step, and then he let go and stood back.

Hank looked down at me.

I wore my long coat and my boots and nothing else.

"Tell me where to be," I said.

I had asked it nine weeks ago in front of a stuffed salmon.

This time it came out of me quietly, and the men heard it as a vow.

"Coat off," Hank said.

I let it fall.

The fire roared on my left side and the cold bit my right.

I stood bare in the green light with my nipples drawn tight.

"Boots."

I stepped out of them.

"On the blankets," he said. "On your back. Head toward me."

I lay down on the wool.

Heat pressed from the drum on my feet and my shins, and the sky arched over my face.

Hank knelt at my head.

He cupped my cheek in one huge hand and bent and kissed me upside down, slow and deep.

"Beck," he said against my mouth. "Rolf. Jesse. Take her."

They came.

Beck knelt at my hip and set two fingers on the pulse in my wrist.

Jesse stretched out beside me and took my other hand.

He kissed my knuckles, and then my mouth, and then my throat.

Rolf went down between my knees.

"Captain," he said, rough and quiet. "I've been thinking about this for two weeks. Let me talk, just a little."
