Chapter 16: Tuesday Noon

At five to noon on Tuesday, the tower lobby was full.

Six hundred people worked in that building, and every one of them seemed to have chosen that hour to buy a sandwich.

They stood in clumps near the turnstiles with their badges on lanyards, all of them with their phones out.

The video of the terrace had four million views, and the one of the brunch had six.

Nobody in that lobby had come for a sandwich.

Brice walked a half step behind my left shoulder, as he had all week.

When I reached the marble pillar by the elevators, his palm settled flat against the small of my back, and it stayed there.

I felt it through my father's jacket.

The man in the gray coat was already waiting by the turnstiles.

He had his folder under one arm and a paper cup of coffee in his hand, and he looked like a man at a bus stop.

At two minutes to noon, the revolving door turned and Preston came through it.

He wore yesterday's suit, and he had shaved badly.

Nobody moved aside for him.

"Mr. Aldridge," said the man in the gray coat, and every head in the lobby turned. "Right on time."

"I'm not here to pay," Preston said. His voice shook. "I told your employer, I need the week."

"And I told him you'd say that."

The big man opened the folder.

"Three notes. Two million, five million, four. The first two were paid by a cashier's check from a source that isn't you." He flipped a page. "The third note, the four million, is the one still open. It was secured by a personal guarantee. I've never liked those, but the guarantor was so eager."
