Chapter 7: Slowly, With the Door Locked

I waited until we were in the truck.

"Marissa said to ask you why you really left my father's house."

Brice kept his eyes on the road.

"I told you I'd tell you after Monday."

"You never told me anything. You said you quit."

"I didn't quit." His hands tightened on the wheel. "I was told to go. I went, because your father wasn't alive to tell me to stay."

"Who told you?"

"Monday, Brynn."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one I can prove," he said. "I won't hand you a name I can't back up. You've had enough of that this week."

I turned to the window and watched the city go by.

He had stood behind my father for nine years, and I had never once asked him what he wanted.

We went to the Wentworth Tower at four o'clock, because the revocation form had to be filed with the legal department before Monday's meeting.

The lobby was nearly empty on a Sunday.

Two guards stood at the turnstiles, and beside them stood the woman in gray with her leather folder.

She had been waiting for us.

"Miss Wentworth," she said. "I'm afraid your access has been suspended pending the board's review."

"By whom?"

"By the company's interim counsel. Your mother signed the order this afternoon."

I felt something cold slide down my back.

"My mother signed it," I said.

"Of course, we're happy to let you in with an escort. For your own protection." She looked at Brice. "Not this man. Mr. Kincade has no standing here, and frankly, Miss Wentworth, a woman in your position should think about who she lets close to her."
