Chapter 28: The Fourth of November
The networks called it at ten past eleven on Tuesday night.
Alvin Stehling lost by nineteen thousand votes.
We watched it at Oma's, on the small kitchen television, with Oma in her chair and the sound turned low.
She said, "Well," and went to bed.
On Wednesday morning, the fourth of November, I woke up in the big bed in the west wing with Jude's arm across my ribs.
The light through the curtains was pale and cold.
He was awake.
He was lying on his side watching me, and had been for some time.
"Good morning, Mrs. Stehling," he said.
"Good morning."
"Do you know what day it is?" he said.
"I know exactly what day it is."
"I haven't brought it up."
"I noticed." I rolled onto my back. "I made a promise in a tack room. I said I'd go on the fourth."
"I remember."
"You agreed," I said.
"I agreed to a lot of things I didn't mean."
I turned my head on the pillow.
His face was calm, but I could see his throat move.
"I'm going to town," I said. "I need feed. Come with me."
"Now?"
"After coffee."
The feed store on Main Street had six men at the counter, a pot of coffee, and a television tuned to the morning news.
It was crowded, because it was the morning after.
Everybody in the county who had an opinion had come in to give it.
When Jude and I walked in, the noise dropped by half.
I saw faces I knew.
The old man was on his stool with his cane across his knees.
