Chapter 31: Wendell's Wedding
The strange thing she asked was whether I would hold the ring.
"He's going to bolt," the bartender had said on the phone, in her low flat voice. "Not on purpose. He's just a runner. I've seen him do it at a stop sign."
"I'm not sure I'm the right person."
"You're the only one he can't stand to disappoint twice. And I think he'd listen to you."
I had looked across the barn at Jude.
He was filling a water trough, with his sleeves rolled and his hat tipped back.
"Let me ask my husband," I'd said.
Jude's answer had been to stand with the hose running over his boots for a full minute.
Then he said, "I'll go. I won't stand up with him."
"Why not?"
"Because I'd have to look at him and not say something," he said.
"That's fair."
"I'll stand behind him. And you hold the ring."
The wedding was on the second Saturday of December, in a backyard in East Austin, under a pecan tree strung with white lights.
There were thirty folding chairs, a taco truck and a three-piece band.
The bride's aunt had made paper flowers.
The bartender wore a cream jumpsuit, and her shaved head was threaded with tiny flowers, and she looked as nervous as a woman can look and still be standing.
