The whole table turned to look at me.
Again.
Eli's hand was already on my knee under the tablecloth.
It didn't squeeze.
It just stayed.
"I'm passing it," I said.
"With an eighty-eight on one midterm."
"With a ninety-one on the second one. I got it back Monday."
My father blinked.
"And then I'm done with finance," I said.
The deck went quiet again.
My aunts put their coffee cups down at the same time.
"Done," my father repeated.
I'd practiced this in the shower for two years.
It came out nothing like I'd practiced.
"In the spring I took a night class," I said. "Illustration. Tuesdays and Thursdays, six to nine. I paid for it from the cafe money. I got an A."
"You didn't tell us."
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because you'd say what you're about to say."
He put his napkin down beside his plate.
"There's a portfolio review in August," I said. "If I get in, I'm switching. Illustration. I'd still graduate on time, maybe one extra summer."
