Chapter 20: Godfather
Nobody in the rectory slept again that night.
At six in the morning the snow was still coming in sideways off the lake, and I was in Lou's truck with Shane, driving downtown.
"Tell me again," Shane said.
"At dark the tear opens over the lake," I said. "The crawlers come down onto the waterfront first. Then they come up Main Street and Niagara Street toward the wall, because that's where the people are."
"And last time?"
"Last time the wall shut every gate at dark, and anybody still outside stayed outside."
I'd been inside, carrying shells to the top of the wall.
I'd listened to it all night.
"So we get the East Side in before dark," Shane said.
"We get everybody in before dark, and we keep the east gate open after dark for the ones who are late."
The wall's guards waved Shane's truck through the south gate without asking for anything.
Ray had moved into the Director's office on the second floor of City Hall.
