Chapter 7: Office Hours

Rudy's POV

At six o'clock the owner took her whistle off the hook, said "Lock up, Rudy," and went home to her dogs.

I locked the front, and I stood in the dark lobby with the keys in my hand and waited.

Marisol had told me that morning, on the way out, without turning her head: "Office. Tonight. After she's gone."

Nothing else.

She had not said please or what time, and I had been standing in the same place for twenty minutes.

I am twenty-four years old.

I played linebacker for three years at Arizona State, and coaches have been telling me what to do since I was nine.

Run there. Hit him. Hold the line. Don't think.

I did every one of them, and I never once wanted to.

Then a woman in a gray sports bra put her hand flat on my chest on a Tuesday and told me to count out loud.

I wanted it so badly that my knees went.

The back door opened and shut.

I heard her sneakers on the rubber.

Then she was in the lobby in her work clothes: black slacks, a white blouse, her hair down.

I had not seen her hair down.

It fell past her shoulders in thick dark waves, and my hands closed.

"Office," she said, and walked past me.

I followed.

The trainers' office was a closet with a window onto the gym floor, a steel desk and a rolling chair.

A whiteboard hung on the wall, where I wrote clients' numbers in dry-erase marker.
