Chapter 4: Sunday at Odette's Table

Odette Barrow lived in a limestone townhouse with a dining table that sat fourteen.

On Sunday night it sat nine.

I walked in at seven exactly, wearing my one good navy dress.

Odette was at the head of the table in her pearls.

Quinton sat at her right hand, in a dark suit, with his eyes on his water glass.

Two of Dexter's cousins sat across from him with their wives.

Dexter sat at the far end.

Next to him, in my usual chair, sat Paloma Serrano.

She wore a soft green dress and a hand on Dexter's sleeve.

"Linnea," Odette said. "Sit."

The only empty seat was beside Quinton.

I sat.

"Dexter has told us a great deal," Odette said. "He says you've been under strain. He says Paloma is a junior colleague he has been mentoring through a difficult time."

"I'm so sorry for all the confusion," Paloma said softly.

Her eyes were wet, and I noticed that she did not blink them dry.

"Linnea hasn't been herself for months," Dexter said. "I didn't want to embarrass her. But she's been checking my accounts, following me, and now she's humiliated this whole family in the group chat."

One of the cousins' wives looked at her plate.

I reached into my bag.

I set the florist's card on the white tablecloth.

For Paloma Serrano, Apt. 14B. You are my everything. D.

Next to it I set a printout of the building's property record, with the owner's name underlined in red.
