Chapter 13: What He Did for Love
"Say it," I said. "Say what you did."
Franklin looked at the pistol, and then at the folder in my left hand.
"You're pointing a stolen gun at a lawyer," he said. "Nothing I say in this room is worth the air."
"Then it costs you nothing."
He laughed softly and leaned against the door frame.
I had thought he would beg.
He had spent six years as the calmest man in every room, and he was calm now.
"Duress," he said. "Any judge would throw it out. You know that, Audrey. You've been married to a law firm for four years."
My phone sat in my dress pocket, with a red dot glowing on its screen.
Teo had started it on the stoop.
"Say it anyway," I said.
"All right."
He straightened his tie.
"Giulia Fontana paid me a retainer six years ago. Her father was sick and she wanted him gone before he named her brother his heir."
My finger stayed on the trigger guard, not the trigger.
"She paid an infusion nurse to dose his line. You were the surgeon on the table, so you were the one who would take the blame."
"And you wrote the blame."
"I wrote the impairment report in one night. I wrote the toxicology panel to go with it. I buried your notes in my study drawer, because a lawyer never burns a document he might need."
"Why keep them?"
"Insurance," he said. "On Giulia."
I felt something go cold and still inside me.
"And me?"
"You were a problem that walked and talked. The medical board wanted to hear you. So I proposed to you."
