Chapter 28: The First Night Back

The old woman held the baby for a long time without saying anything.

She sat propped on four pillows in her bed, with her stick against the wall and her tea going cold.

The baby slept in the crook of her arm, with one fist under her chin.

"She has the Villard forehead," the grandmother said at last. "The doctor had that forehead. And thank God she has not got a single Marceau ear."

"Madame," said Margaux.

"I am eighty-four. I will say what I like." She looked up at the pair of them in the doorway. "Julien. Come here."

He came and bent down.

She took his sleeve in her free hand and spoke into his ear, not quietly.

"Six weeks is not so long. Do not dawdle, boy."

Julien went red to the roots of his hair.

Margaux pretended to examine the curtains.

Six weeks later, to the day, the doctor shut his folder and said she was cleared.

"Everything has healed as it should, Madame. You may resume your life."

"All of it?"

"All of it."

She thanked him with a perfectly steady face.

She went home through the afternoon traffic with her knees pressed together.

Lise was on the front step with an overnight bag and her curls in a clip.

"Hand her over," said Lise.

"Lise."

"I have three bottles, a spare pyjama and a nursery rhyme I learned off the internet. I'm taking her to mine. She will be fine. You will not see her until tomorrow at ten."

"I haven't said what for."

"Margaux. You've been wearing that face since breakfast."

The baby went into the car seat, indignant.

Lise drove off with a wave and a shout of "Be loud!" through the window.

Margaux closed the door, and there was Julien in the hall.

He stood at the foot of the stairs in his shirtsleeves, watching her with a crooked smile.

"I didn't know," he said. "Lise sent me a text that said, wear something you can get out of fast."

"She would."

"I should object to being managed by your friend."

"Don't object. Say yes to me."

She crossed the hall and put her hands flat on his chest.
