Chapter 18: The File

"What did he mean?" I said.

My father did not answer right away.

He crossed the kitchen and set a thick brown folder on the island, between the fruit bowl and my grandmother's cake stand.

It had a gray elastic band around it and a label on the tab in his square printing.

PRUDEN, B. Started seven years ago.

"I kept a file," he said. "I told you that."

"You told me you watched him."

"I did."

I opened the folder.

The first page was a bank statement.

The second was a photograph of Brent outside a restaurant, holding the door for a woman I did not know.

Then came a typed memorandum on Stannard Freight and Rail letterhead. At the top was my father's name, Douglas Stannard, with a date.

It was the week after Lakeshore signed the loan.

I read the first paragraph.

Then I read it again, because the words had not gone in.

Investigator reports subject was previously married to Shelby Dray, Cook County, eleven years prior.

No dissolution found.

Subject's marriage to my daughter, as of this report, is therefore without legal effect.

The kitchen was very quiet.

"Seven years," I said.

"Yes."

"You've known my marriage was void for seven years."

"Yes."

I turned the page.

The next one was a copy of the county record I had pulled on Wednesday morning with my hands shaking.

It had been in his folder since before the company had its first logo.

"I sat across from you at Thanksgiving," I said. "Six times. I passed you the potatoes."

"I know."

"You let me wear his ring."

"Leigh."

"Why?"

He took his glasses off the cord and held them without putting them on.
