Chapter 6: Nothing Personal Until Friday

Garland Harbor took up the top four floors of a glass tower on the river.

It was seven at night. The elevator opened on a hallway with one light on.

Nick Garland stood at the far end of it in his shirtsleeves, holding a printout, and he did not seem surprised to see me.

I held out his charcoal coat.

"You said Friday."

"I said bring it Friday." He took it from me. "It's Wednesday."

"Somebody forged my name on a deed this morning," I said. "I'd like to know how much of your deal depends on it."

He studied me.

Then he turned and walked toward a glass conference room with a long table in it.

I followed.

On the table lay a stack of closing documents as thick as my arm.

"Sit," he said.

I sat.

He opened a binder to the second tab and turned it around.

"Schedule Two. Real property of the seller." He put his finger on a line. "Unit 2301. Owner of record: Brent Pruden and Shelby Pruden, joint tenants. My lawyers updated it at noon. The deed was recorded this morning."

"It's a forgery."

"Prove it."

"I will."

"How?"

"I can't tell you," I said. "Not tonight."

He stared at me for a long moment.

"You keep saying that," he said. "I'm starting to wonder whether you're protecting yourself, or protecting him."

"Neither."

"Then who?"

I did not answer.

He closed the binder, and I saw his jaw work.

"Fine," he said. "Do you want to see the rest?"

I blinked.

"Brent's lawyer told my lawyers the wife would sign everything. Now there are two wives, and one of them was filmed last night getting paint poured on her head." He pushed the binder an inch toward me. "I'm buying a company from a man who lied to me in front of three hundred thousand people. I'd like a second opinion on what else he lied about."
