Chapter 13: The Five Families

The Commission met in a back room above a bakery in Queens.

The old Queens boss owned the building, and the long table in the middle of the room had been there longer than I had been alive.

Four chairs were already taken when we walked in.

The old Queens boss sat at the head with a cane across his knees.

The two cousins from New Jersey sat side by side, and the widow from Staten Island sat alone in black with a rosary wound around her fingers.

Tullio sat at the foot of the table with his hands folded.

He had beaten us there by ten minutes, and the room had already heard him.

I could tell by how nobody would look at me.

Rocco pulled out a chair for me beside his own.

"She stays," he said.

"Rocco," the old boss said. "Sit. We'll get to her."

"We'll get to her with her sitting down."

Nobody argued.

I sat, and I put the white envelope from the lab on the table in front of me.

Gia took the chair behind us with her ledger on her knee.

"My brother tells us," the old boss said, "that the woman beside you is the surgeon who killed your father."

"Your brother is half right," Rocco said. "She's a surgeon."

One of the cousins snorted.

"Dr. Winslow," Tullio said, in his warm voice, and half rose from his chair. "No one here wishes her harm. But we all remember the papers. Our father went in for his heart and came out in a box, and my brother signed the letter that named her. Now she sleeps under his roof and decides what he eats."

"And what he drinks," the widow said quietly.

"And what he drinks. I ask only what any brother would ask. What does she want?"

He sat back down.

It was a good speech, and every head at the table had turned toward me.

I stood up.

"May I?" I said to the old boss.

He looked at me for a long moment over the top of his cane.
