Chapter 14: The Nurse
The old boss read the paper without hurrying.
Then he passed it to the widow, who read it faster and passed it on.
The woman in the gray coat stood by the door with her purse held in front of her in both hands.
I had last seen her face when she looked at the hearing board and not at me.
"State it," the old boss said.
"I was the head nurse in the operating room," she said. "I stood at the table that morning. I saw Dr. Winslow go straight to the incision without the checklist."
Her voice was thin, and she had rehearsed it.
"You swore to the same thing four years ago," I said.
"Yes."
"Then you won't mind a question from the surgeon."
The old boss lifted two fingers, and she nodded once.
"Where did you stand?" I asked.
"At the table."
"At which side?"
"At your left."
"I'm left-handed," I said. "Nobody stands at my left. It's where my hand works."
Somebody at the table shifted in a chair.
The nurse's eyes went to Carson.
"I misspoke," she said. "I mean your right."
"My scrub nurse stood on my right, and she's the one who handed me the knife. The head nurse never stood at the table at all. She ran the room from the door and she read out the checklist."
"I read it," the nurse said quickly. "I read the checklist to you, and you said nothing."
"You read it out loud, in front of everyone?"
"Yes."
"Then a dozen people heard it, and you can name one of them."
She opened her mouth.
I waited.
The cousins were looking at her now, and the widow had put down her rosary.
"The checklist is read by the circulating nurse," I said. "The surgeon answers each line. If that wasn't done, the person who didn't do it was standing by the door."
Nobody spoke.
"You weren't in that room," I said. "You were told to sign for it afterward."
