Chapter 22: The Album
The woman in the grey cardigan walked up the middle of the ballroom.
Nobody stopped her. Three hundred heads turned as she passed.
She climbed the dais steps and set the album on the podium, beside the roses.
"Good evening," she said. "I'm sorry to spoil your dinner."
"Security," said Philippa, quite quietly.
Nobody moved. The two men by the door looked at each other, and then at the room.
"I lived on Marsh Road for twenty years," the woman said. "Declan's father visited every Thursday. His wife visited once a year, to bring the check."
She opened the album.
The first page held a photograph of a younger Philippa on the porch of a small yellow house.
She was shaking hands with the woman, and they were both smiling.
Clipped under it was a check, made out to cash and signed in a slanting hand.
*Quincy Foundation, Family Fund.*
"Pass it down," said the woman. "Please."
A man in a grey suit stepped onto the dais and took the album from her.
He was the man who had seconded the motion to remove Declan. He turned the pages one by one, and his face changed with each.
"These are dated," he said slowly. "Twenty years of them. Monthly."
"They are," said the woman.
"Philippa. These are from the family fund."
"That fund was my husband's private gift," said Philippa.
"It was the foundation's discretionary endowment." His voice had gone thick. "I sat on the audit committee. You told us it was a scholarship program."
"I told you what was necessary."
"You told us a lie," said an older woman at the front table, and stood up.
