Chapter 22: The Window

Anthony's POV

I watched Clark Kovach's minute from across the lobby, because I was not about to leave her alone with him.

I could not hear a word.

He talked, and she listened with her arms folded.

He did not reach for her, and he did not cry.

At the end he took a ring of keys from his pocket and held them out, and she did not take them.

She shook her head.

He nodded, as if that were the answer he had come for, and walked out through the revolving door alone.

"What did he say?" I asked, when she came back.

"That he is out of the house by Saturday. That he is not asking me for anything."

"Term three."

"He kept it," she said. "I didn't expect that. I still don't forgive him."

"I would not ask you to."

She leaned her shoulder against mine, in front of the entire firm, for one second.

Then she went upstairs to be made a partner.

It took the judge in Westchester two weeks.

Meredith's motion was eight pages, and it said plainly that she had put her name on a judgment she never read, and that the firm joined her in asking the court to vacate it.

The district attorney's lawyers added a letter, and the forged power of attorney, and a sworn statement from a notary who had never met Bree Rowan's version of Meredith.

I sat in the second row.

My hands were folded, and they were not steady.

"The default judgment entered against Anthony A. Whitlow is vacated," the judge said. "Service is found to have been defective. The restraining order is expunged from the record. The petitioner's conduct is referred to the district attorney."
