Chapter 10: The Agent

The agent pulled the visitor chair to the end of my bed and sat with her folder on her knees.

"I'm going to ask you to write it all down," she said. "Every call, every voice, every word you remember. You don't have to talk."

She slid a yellow legal pad across the tray.

I wrote for forty minutes.

I wrote the times, because I know exactly how long a song is.

Call one at 6:52, call two at 7:05, the fourth call during track nine of a playlist I had made for my husband.

I wrote the word Pip, and the word Instagram, and the tapping on the glass.

I wrote "Good."

I did not cry. I pressed hard enough that the paper tore twice.

When I turned the pad around, the agent read it from top to bottom without speaking.

Beth had stopped breathing somewhere in the middle.

"This is the best statement I've taken in six years," the agent said. "It's also not enough."

Ansel looked up from the corner.

"Say it," he said.

"The calls are real," the agent said. "The carrier confirms seven connections to your phone from a prepaid number, Dr. Erickson, at the minutes your wife gave me."

She folded her hands.

"But a nurse who answers her boss's phone and says it's a scam is not committing a crime. Not believing a ransom call is not kidnapping."

"She planned it," Ansel said. "I have her voice."

"You have a copy of a file from a nineteen-year-old that you were handed in a parking garage. Her lawyer has already sent me a letter."
