Chapter 5: Seven Missed

Ansel came through the door while the glass was still ringing.

He stopped when he saw Janelle in the chair.

"I'll give you two a minute," she said brightly, and she touched his sleeve on her way out.

I watched his arm, and I watched him not move it.

He sat on the edge of the visitor chair, still in his scrub pants, with a blood-stained cuff he had forgotten to change.

His eyes went to my face. This time they stayed there.

"She's four pounds one," he said. "She's breathing on her own. She grabbed my finger an hour ago, Lora, and she would not let go."

I wanted to laugh and cry. My jaw would do neither.

A nurse had left a small whiteboard on my tray with a marker tied to it.

My left wrist was in a cast. I took the marker in my right hand and wrote, slowly, in big crooked letters.

SEVEN.

"Seven what?" he said.

CALLS.

Ansel read it. His face went still.

"Janelle told me they phoned tonight," he said. "She never said how many. She said it was the scam."

He put his hands between his knees.

"I thought it was AI. The email, the sign over the sink, the chief of ortho wiring fifty thousand dollars to nobody. I thought it was the same people, and I kept hanging up."

I turned the board over and wrote on it.

I HEARD.

"Heard what?"

PIP. THE RING. I wrote the next word hard enough that the marker squeaked. GOOD.
