Chapter 21: Run It Twice

"Not here," Dani said, and walked past him.

Nolan Stroud followed her into the concrete stairwell.

The heavy door closed on the sound of Preston Halloway crying on a marble floor.

She stopped on the first landing.

She set the box on the step and kept both hands on it, and her shoulders were very straight.

"You heard," she said.

"Enough."

"Then I'll say it once."

He did not move.

He had learned long ago that when someone needed to say a hard thing, the kindest thing was to say nothing.

He stayed a wall she could lean on.

"I lived this already," Dani said. "Not all of it."

"I woke up on the morning of the divorce, and I knew how it ended."

"How did it end?"

"You were in the doorway. You heard. I was twenty-nine."

He felt it land somewhere under his ribs.

"Glenn sat with me," she said. "The last two days."

"He read me the commit log off a laptop because I asked. Nobody else came from the company."

Her voice stayed very level.

"Imogen sent flowers with no card. My mother held my hand until it was dark."

She stopped.

Nolan said nothing.

He could not have said anything.

"There was one message I never opened," Dani said. "From a stranger. It came at three-oh-four, the morning of the divorce."

His whole body went still.

"I carried that little unread dot for fourteen months."

"I thought it would be someone telling me they were sorry. I wanted to keep one message that wasn't."

She took a breath.

"I died not knowing who he was."

The stairwell went very quiet.

Somewhere above them, a pipe knocked twice.

Nolan sat down.

He didn't decide to.

His knees went, and he found himself on the cold concrete step with his elbows on his thighs.
